Tour Alexandra Township in Johannesburg
Experience the township-vibe in Alexandra. (It is only 10 minutes away from Sandton.) Alexandra township was once a market garden owned by Mr Papenfus. He named it after his wife, Alexandra. The township was born in 1912. It was one of the first places in Johannesburg to grant African people the right to own property. Originally it was one and a half square kilometers in size. Today it has grown to 7,6 square kilometers with the inclusion of the East Bank, West Bank and Tsotsomane (Athletic village). It is estimated that there are 600 000 residents crammed onto this small piece of land.

Mandela’s House
This one-roomed house is the first house that Mandela owned in Johannesburg. He first stayed at the Anglican Church on 8th Avenue before moving to the house at 46, 7th Avenue
East Bank
At East Bank you will see the first elite housing project in Alexandra. Here you find the "cream" of Alex (often professionals, artists and musicians). We will also go past the organic market, see some thatched huts and possibly even view African traditional Zulu and Pedi dancers.
Jukskei River
As an integral part of the Alex scene, the Jukskei River means different things to different people. For some it is a place to build a shack; for some it is a polluted health hazard; and for some it is an opportunity for future development.
Msomi Gang Head Quarters.
The notorious Msomi gang ruled and terrorized Alex in the late 1950s and early 60s. They were like the Mafia. Businessmen were forced to pay "protection fees" and able bodied young men were forced to join them.
The Athletic Village.
Visit the Athletic village.
The Men’s and Women’s Hostels
These multi-storied flats were built specifically to house single male and female workers. Their way of life encouraged prostitution and infidelity, which led to the breaking up of many families.
Zion Christian Church
On 19th Avenue one finds the ZCC. It the biggerst church in the Southern Hemesphere with close to 5 million members. The story goes that this church was conceived on 7th Avenue, near Nelson Mandela’s one-roomed house. Its headquarters are in Moria, near Pietersburg.
